I simply allowed my pragmatic brain to express itself until it was exhausted and then I opened the door and ushered it out to the colorful playground for a double recess. There are times when there are many pieces of silk that need to be painted and completed all at the same time. If I allow myself to get too far in my head regarding time frames and expectations it will compromise my ability to create in the way that my kind clients expect. This is where my creativity protocol comes into play. I have little problem lining out in my mind the different pieces that are needed for a collection but I have to start off properly. This means tidying up my art space. I vacuum and mop the floors, clean out the painting trays and brushes and gather beverages and the teensiest bit of chocolate. Then the fun begins! I select the perfect music for each piece. Recently I completed a 15x60 piece of silk that just sang of its love for the TANGO. It was practically a flamenco dance on fabric or perhaps a Salsa class on a Friday evening. I painted it standing up and without providing a painful visual to my readers, I am quite certain that I was dancing the big white girl nerd dance while painting. Other pieces require a lovely old black and white film where the agonized male lead utilizes passionate words in clipped tones to call his lover back to him. I often watch old Merrie Melodies cartoons from the 1930's to bring the fanciful energy into the room and it never fails me. How wonderful it is to bring in playfulness to new skills that are being learned and in this way dissipate some fear of failure that may be lurking. It is especially meaningful to bring in fun and whimsy to everyday and mundane tasks. Either way you will find in doing this that excellence will be waiting for you in all that you do. And so it is. |
